Kevin Kline Lines Up Crazy Dual Role in Charlie Kaufman's 'Frank or Francis'

The last film screenwriter Charlie Kaufman directed was the bananas 'Synecdoche, NY.' Judging from some newly revealed plot details, 'Frank or Francis' -- his second directorial effort -- may be just as bananas. First, some casting: Variety reports that Kevin Kline has joined the previously attached Steve Carell, Jack Black an Nicolas Cage in the film, which follows an online film blogger and his antagonistic relationship with a hack filmmaker. Kline will play a Richard Waller, the brother of famous fictional filmmaker Jonathan Waller, as well as Richard's Head. Who's Richard's Head? Per Variety, "an animatronic head that, through the use of advanced screenwriting techniques, helps Jonathan develop a completely inoffensive product that will have the broadest possible appeal and zero artistic integrity." OK, then! As for the rest of the cast, Black is attached to play the blogger, with Carell as the director and Cage as an actor famous for films like 'Fat Dad.' ABC Buys Spiritual Drama From Lost Exec Producer Carlton Cuse And Pastor Rob Bell

Carlton Cuse has teamed with author/pastor Rob Bell for Stronger, a drama project with spiritual overtones, which has been sold to ABC via ABC Studios in a hefty script deal. Stronger, which the former Lost co-showrunner and the founder of Michigan’s Mars Hill Bible Church are co-writing and executive producing, revolves around Tom Stronger, a musician and teacher, and his spiritual journey as he becomes a benefactor and guide to others. Music is expected to be a big part of the show, which features autobiographical elements as Bell is a former musician and played with rock/gospel bands in the 1990s. Cuse and Bell met at the 2011 Time 100 gala — Bell was a 2011 honoree and Cuse had been on the magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people in 2010. The two immediately hit it off and soon concocted the idea for Stronger. While spiritual, Stronger won’t be supernatural. It will touch on the spiritual side of people’s lives much like the final season of Lost did and like Bell has done in his career as a pastor speaking to congregations of more than 10,000. Bell last week announced that he will be leaving the Mars Hill Bible Church in December to move with his family to Los Angeles. The series with Cuse is one of many things Bell plans to pursue, including touring and writing more books. (His most recent tome, Love Wins, is currently on the NY Times bestseller list.) Bell’s expertise is expected to add authenticity to the project, which won’t be straight and square like previous spiritual network offerings, including Touched By An Angel and 7th Heaven, and is also expected to feature a healthy dose of humor. Because the genre is missing from TV at moment, the networks have pursued projects with spiritual elements. Marc Cherry’s Hallelujah was picked up to pilot at ABC last season and is currently being redeveloped. In addition to Stronger, Cuse has another project, Civil War drama Point of Honor, in development at ABC. Co-written by Cuse and Randall Wallace, Point of Honor was sold late last year and remains in consideration. On the feature side, WME-repped Cuse is writing an African action adventure movie for 20th Century Fox with Shawn Levy attached to direct and Hugh Jackman to star.

Connie Guttersen, author of The New Sonoma Cookbook stopped by Access Hollywood Live to share a few of her favorite dishes, which are simple to make and take less than 30 minutes to pull together. Heres the recipe for her yummy Gigi Salad. The Gigi Salad(start to finish takes 30 minutes and yields 4 servings) Ingredients: 2 cups hearts of palms, sliced2 cups orange segments1 cup jicama, julienne1 pound shrimp, peeled and cooked1/2 cup Citrus Vinaigrette (see below) 1/2 cup pomegrante seeds1 California avocado, cut in quarters lengthwise, then in 1/4 inch pieces1/4 cup scallions, thinly cut on bias2 cups butter lettuce, cut into strips4 flatbreads2 tablespoons slivered almonds, toastedSalt and pepper to taste Combine heart of palm, orange, jicama, and shrimp in a bowl. Toss with salt and pepper. Dress with 4 tablespoons Citrus Vinaigrette. Gently mix in pomengrante seeds, avocado, scallions, and lettuce. Serve on top of warm whole-wheat flatbread. Garnish with almonds. ***** Citrus Vinaigrette (4 servings) Ingredients: 1/2 cup orange juice1/4 cup grapefruit juice1 tablespoon lemon juice1 tablespoon red wine vinegar1 tablespoon orange zest1 tablespoon soy sauce1 tablespoon agave syrup 1 pinch chili flakes1 tablespoon olive oilSalt and pepper to taste Combine all ingredients in a blender. Flatiron, Variance partner for 'Elite'

New Video's Flatiron Film and Variance Films are partnering for the U.S. release of Jos Padilha's crime thriller "Elite Squad: The Enemy Within," the highest-grosser of all time in Brazil at over $70 million. The sequel will open in NY on Nov. 11 and in Los Angeles a week later, followed by a platform expansion to top markets. The film is Brazil's official submission to the Academy Awards and has been screened on the festival circuit at Sundance, Berlinale, and Austin's Fantastic Fest. "Elite Squad: The Enemuy Within" is directed by Padilha and co-written by Padilha and Brulio Mantovani. Story takes place in the sprawling slum that surrounds Rio de Janeiro and centers on the head of Rio's Special Police Operations Battalion being accused of a massacre when a mission to quell a jail riot ends in the violent death of a gang leader. Jackson will co-star with Nicolas Cage and John Cusack in the new film. Cage plays the role of the state trooper investigating the murders, while Cusack plays the killer.
