The 50 Cent/Nicolas Cage Collaboration You've Been Waiting For

Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson has a song called 'P.I.M.P.,' where he raps about pimping and hustling, which perhaps makes him the ideal choice to play an Alaskan pimp who tries to save his prostitutes from being killed in 'The Frozen Ground.' Jackson will co-star with Nicolas Cage and John Cusack in the new film. Cage plays the role of the state trooper investigating the murders, while Cusack plays the killer. If only Jackson was cast in 'The Frozen Ground' two weeks ago, it would have had a chance to absolutely make this list. Next time! [Anchorage Daily News via CinemaBlend] Images courtesy of Getty

I'm Carolyn Parker

A Clinica Estetico, Jacob Burns Film Center POV/American Documentary presentation of a Look and Stay production. Produced by Jonathan Demme, Lindsay Jaeger, Daniel Wolff, Steve Apkon. Executive producers, Glenn Allen, Rocco Caruso, Abdul Franklin, Simon Kilmurry. Directed by Jonathan Demme. With: Carolyn Parker, Kyrah Julian, Ray Nagin.Jonathan Demme's "I'm Carolyn Parker" offers a slender but engaging human-interest angle on the slow-moving recovery effort following Hurricane Katrina. Known for her work on behalf of New Orleans' heavily impacted Lower Ninth Ward and her fellow residents' "right to return," Parker makes a memorable camera subject perfectly suited to Demme's scruffy, affectionate documaking. Shot over the five years it took to rebuild her house, this smallscreen-bound item reps a worthy addition to the growing body of work on Katrina and its still-ongoing aftermath. Parker first drew headlines at a January 2006 city council meeting where, after the proposal of a temporary halt to rebuilding efforts in New Orleans' worst-flooded areas, she publicly retorted, "Over my dead body." That clip provides a feisty, inspiring counterpoint to the warm, irrepressibly good-humored woman captured here in a series of well-observed human gestures, whether she's frying chicken in the FEMA trailer she shares with her daughter or worshipping at one of numerous local churches threatened with closure. Resourcefully made docu ties Parker's advocacy to the civil-rights struggle she vividly recalls living through, which no doubt accounts at least partly for her extraordinary resilience.Camera (color/B&W, HD), Demme; editor, Ido Haar; music, Zafer Tawil; music supervisor, Susan Jacobs. Reviewed at Venice Film Festival (Horizons), Sept. 5, 2011. (Also in Toronto Film Festival -- Real to Reel.) Running time: 91 MIN. Contact Justin Chang at justin.chang@variety.com

Murdoch seeks deal with Dowler family

LONDON -- Rupert Murdoch is likely to make a personal donation to charity of 1 million ($1.57 million) as part of a settlement being agreed with the family of one of the victims of phone hacking by the News of the World. The family of murdered British teenager Milly Dowler, whose phone was hacked by a private investigator employed by the U.K. tabloid, is understood to be close to agreeing a deal with News International. The settlement will reportedly also involve the Dowlers receiving around $3.14 million, a sum that dwarfs other amounts paid to victims of phone hacking. News International told the BBC that it was "in advanced negotiations with the Dowler family." It was the revelation on July 4 that Dowler's mobile was hacked and that messages on the device had been deleted, giving the family false hope that Milly was still alive following her disappearance in 2002, that was the tipping point in the hacking and police corruption scandal. The revelation unleashed a wave of public anger in the U.K. and overseas. Within days, News International closed the News of the World. Public opinion was so hostile that News Corp. was forced to abandon its bid to own British paybox BSkyB outright. The amount of money being offered to Milly's family is believed to be a record for such a case. Murdoch has apologized repeatedly for the News of the World intercepting messages left on Milly's phone. In other settlements made so far in the scandal, the actress Sienna Miller was paid $157,000, while PR advisor Max Clifford pocketed $1.57 million. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com
